Donna L. Bates

Donna L. Bates, 92, of West Mansfield, a beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, at Bluebird of Marysville, surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 20, 1933, in East Liberty, she was the daughter of the late John and Gathyl (Bechtel) Yoho. A graduate of East Liberty High School, Donna furthered her education at Urbana University, earning her degree in 1973.

Throughout her career, Donna worked diligently, beginning with Rockwell, and later serving as a teacher's aide with Buckeye Local Schools. She found her true calling teaching elementary music at Benjamin Logan Schools, where she inspired many young musicians and nurtured a love of music in her students.

Donna was a proud and longtime member of the West Mansfield Methodist Church. Her dedication to her faith and the church community was evident in her service as an organist, and she was honored to be inducted into the church's music Hall of Fame. She also actively participated in various organizations, including the United Methodist Women and the Starlight Circle of the Kings Daughters, and was a past matron of the Harriett Chapter of the O.E.S. Additionally, she was a valued member of the Studio Club.

In her personal life, Donna cherished her family time, frequently creating lasting memories with those she loved. She is survived by her sons, Steve (Darlene) Bates and Scott (Linda) Bates, both of West Mansfield; her daughter, Sondra (Lori Matassa) Bates of Phoenix, AZ; her grandchildren, Brandy (Jay) Liles, Bridget (John Holden) Bates, Brad (Mikki) Bates, Brian (Chaya) Bates, John (Jamie) Bates, Emily (Derrick) Pena and Holly (Nicholas) Mays; as well as her 19 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Donna shared a wonderful life with her late husband, Bernard "Bernie" Bates, whom she married March 23, 1952 at the West Mansfield United Methodist Church, and he preceded her in death on October 22, 2020. During their retirement years, they enjoyed spending the winters at their home in Ft. Myers, FL.

Services to celebrate Donna's life will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, November 3, 2025 at the West Mansfield Methodist Church 212 E Center St, West Mansfield. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Monday beginning at 10:00 AM at the church. Burial will be held at a later date at the Hathaway Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Wilson Funeral Home, Schnurrenberger Chapel 222 W. Center St. West Mansfield. Memorial contributions can be made to the West Mansfield Methodist Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Envelopes will be available at the church.
