“The man is a success who has lived well, loved much, and laughed often.”  If you agree with Robert Louis Stevenson, and you knew Bill Caulin, then you know those words describe him perfectly.

William (Bill) Peter Caulin, 92, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, after a brief illness.

Bill lived life!  He traveled the world, was guided by his faith, made friends wherever he went, and shared his laughter with a special twinkle in his blue eyes.

The year of Bill’s birth, 1930, was significant for William and Edna (McManus) Caulin because on May 21, in Brooklyn, New York their son William (Bill) was born and he would be the eldest of their four children.  That same year was also significant because the planet Pluto was discovered and named as a planet.  Did you know it has a heart shape on its surface?  Twenty-one years later Bill would share his heart on June 2, 1951, with the love of his life Eileen Fowler in Brooklyn, New York.

After being married, Bill and Eileen moved to Long Island, New York where he joined the Malverne Police Department.  He not only loved his career in law enforcement, he also took great pride in serving his community. He retired as a Lieutenant with the admiration and respect of his fellow officers.

Bill always loved meeting and connecting with people. He was never too busy to stop and chat.  His genuine curiosity about people and his caring nature were demonstrated in so many ways and he was always standing by ready to help others.  With a great sense of humor and an easy going and optimistic nature Bill easily made friends wherever he went.

He was devoted to Eileen and his family. Eileen’s sisters often commented on how lucky she was to have such a wonderful husband!

Bill enjoyed golf and always looked forward to golfing trips with his wife and her family. More than anything, Bill and Eileen loved to travel. They planned a special trip each year with adventures that included England, Scotland, France, Spain, Morocco, Norway, and Italy. Their most extensive trip covered both Asia and Europe with Eileen’s sister Jeanette and her husband Dante.  That was a trip that provided many years of memories and storytelling.

Bill’s devotion to his faith and service of others was evident throughout his life.   Growing up he was very active at Our Lady of Peace Parish in Lynbrook, Long Island. He also was a communicant, Eucharistic Minister, and a lector as well as a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. During his years as a resident of Marysville, Ohio, Bill was a parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and enjoyed spending time with the many friends he made through the parish.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Eileen, daughter Patricia Caulin, son-in-law Walter Glaser, sister June Conklin, brother Ronald Caulin, niece Michelle Madretzke, and nephew Damien O’Donnell.

Left to cherish his memory are his son William F. Caulin and his wife Laurie and his daughter Teresa Caulin-Glaser, as well as his brother Michael Caulin and very special sisters-in-law, Alice (Frank) Gavin, Gloria O’Donnell, Jeanette Pellei, Phyllis Garrigan, and Eileen Caulin and a dear brother-in -law, Charles (Karen) Fowler.  Bill’s grandchildren and great grandchildren will cherish many memories of their Grandpa and the spirit in which he lived his life.  That includes grandchildren Kelly O’Connell, Brien Caulin and his wife Aleah, and William N. Caulin and six great grandchildren: Caiden O’Connell, Declan O’Connell, Finnigan O’Connell, Brogan O’Connell, Harvey Fox Caulin, and Walter Fox Caulin as well as many dear nieces and nephews. He also will be missed by special friends Rick Spitznagel, Trish and Roger Penwell, and Paul, Chelsea, Michael & Molly Melcher.
