Luther J. Nicol Luther J. Nicol, age 89, of Marysville died Wednesday, March 9, 2011, with his wife and family at his side in the Morey Center at Memorial Hospital of Union County following a short illness. He was retired from the Marysville Lumber Company, and with his wife, Gertrude, was the first owner/operator of the Short Stop Convenience Stores established in Marysville in 1966. Luther was a faithful, lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church and attended St. John's Lutheran School and Marysville High School. He proudly served in the US Army during World War II from August 1942-October 1945 having spent the majority of his service time on the Aleutian Islands and was a Bronze Star recipient. He was a member of American Legion Post #79 and VFW Post #3320. Luther volunteered with the Mobile Meals program for the past 3 years, was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan, and enjoyed vegetable gardening, yard work, and playing cards and dart ball. He and his wife enjoyed many camping trips and spent several winters in Florida. More than anything, Luther was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who treasured time spent with his family. He was born July 28, 1921, in Marysville to the late Lewis and Anna Fladt Nicol. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Nicol, a granddaughter, Jennifer Nicol, 2 brothers, Harold Nicol and Willard Nicol, a sister-in-law, Alice Nicol, and 4 brothers-in-law, Ben Elsom, Walter Burger, Shade Watkins, and Ed Eger. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Gertrude Rausch Nicol, to whom he was married on September 20, 1947, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Carl Zehner; his children, Lewis (Marcia) Nicol, Columbus; Wanda (Doug) Snyder, Springfield; and Kevin (Kaye) Nicol, Marysville; 5 grandsons, Shawn, Benjamin, Andrew, Daniel & Kyle; 4 sisters, Florence Watkins, Marie Elsom, and Lucille Eger, each of Marysville; and Dorothy Burger, Lake Wales, FL; his brother, Lester (Pat) Nicol, Columbus; a sister-in-law, Betty Nicol, Uniontown; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Raymond & Susie Rausch, Milford Center; many nieces and nephews; and his church family. Friends may call from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Mannasmith Funeral Home. Reverend John Fair will officiate the funeral service on Sunday, March 13, at 4:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial with full military honors conducted by the Union County Honor Guard will take place at the church cemetery.
